Royal Caribbean has begun a new policy of offering complimentary drink vouchers per night to select levels of Crown and Anchor Society members to help offset congestion in its Diamond and Concierge lounges.

Emails are starting to go out to Diamond, Diamond Plus and Pinnacle Club members who have an upcoming Royal Caribbean cruise booked to alert them about this new policy.

It’s widely believed this new policy of offering drink vouchers is an attempt by Royal Caribbean to offset crowding in its Diamond and Concierge lounges.

This new policy will be rolled out to the entire fleet by Fall 2014.

Which ships are offering it right now is in flux, but we know that at the latest Freedom of the Seas will by July, Navigator of the Seas by September.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced today that it has agreed with STX France to move forward on the order of a fourth Oasis-class ship for delivery in 2018. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard D. Fain and President and Chief Operating Officer Adam Goldstein, along with STX France Chief Executive Officer Laurent Castaing, announced the planned ship order at the keel-laying ceremony for the third Oasis-class ship at the STX shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France.

“The Oasis Class was a revolution in maritime design when it was launched in 2009. Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas continue to be in a class by themselves both in terms of guest satisfaction and financial returns. Today’s announcement is a reflection of their success,” said Richard D. Fain, chairman and chief executive officer, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “We are thrilled to announce the order of a fourth Oasis-class ship during the keel-laying milestone of the third. This announcement is also a testament to the men and women of STX France who have worked so hard and so cooperatively on Oasis III.”

The order is subject to documentation and satisfaction of financing and other customary conditions. Projected capital expenditures for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 are $1.4 billion, $1.4 billion, $2.2 billion, $0.3 billion and $1.5 billion, respectively, taking into account this order and existing ship orders.

Known for pushing the boundaries and as part of the cruise line’s continuous improvement mantra, Oasis III will be approximately 20 percent more energy efficient than Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas,  which already are the most energy efficient cruise ships in the world. The fourth Oasis-class ship will further build on that efficiency.

“We are very excited that Royal Caribbean has agreed to move forward with a fourth Oasis-class ship demonstrating their confidence in STX France to construct the most superior cruise ships in the world,” said Laurent Castaing, Chief Executive Officer, STX France. “We look forward to advancing the efficiencies of our ship building process to produce the most innovative ships that vacationers have come to expect from Royal Caribbean.”

The keel laying of the third Oasis-class ship marks an important milestone in the development of the ship, as it signifies the beginning of its physical construction. During the ceremony, a 1,000-ton block measuring 32-ft by 154-ft (10 x 47 meters) was lifted by crane into the building dock. Newly minted coins were placed under the keel and will stay in place there until the end of the ship’s construction. Once the ship is near to completion, the coins are retrieved and presented to the ship’s Captain and crew to be placed onboard the ship. According to maritime tradition, the coins are said to bring luck to the ship during its construction process and then to its Captain and crew when she is sailing out at sea. Still to be named, the third Oasis-class ship will be delivered in spring 2016.

The third and fourth Oasis-class ships will join Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas – which took the cruise industry by storm with their launch in 2009 and 2010, respectively – and share the title of the largest ships in the world. They feature a revolutionary design with a split superstructure and the cruise line’s neighborhood concept of seven distinct themed areas. At 225,282 gross registered tons and spanning 16 decks with 2,700 staterooms, the Oasis-class ships also introduced extraordinary “firsts” at sea such as an 82 foot-long zip line, a handcrafted carousel, the Rising Tide elevating bar, the AquaTheater high-diving performance venue, and the Central Park with more than 12,000 live trees and plants. The Oasis Class also offers amenities that can only be found on Royal Caribbean, such as twin FlowRider surf simulators, cantilevered whirlpools, an ice-skating rink, the H2O Zone kids aquapark, and the Royal Promenade, an interior boulevard that stretches nearly the length of the ship and flanked by restaurants, lounges and boutiques, among many others.

Margolf Cruise

Hello Robin and your Entire Crew,

As you are aware, our family has planned cruises exclusively with you for many, many years. (it’s actually too many years to count.) You have been straight forwarded with business tact, but also caring to each and every family member. You have come to know our personalities and what each of us would like or not like. This illustrates your dedication to our cruising needs.  And when we ask for a favor, you try your best to help make it happen. You have become our personal Cruise Planner Blessing! This is why you will continue to have our entire families’ cruising business.

So, of course, I would call upon you to help me plan my husband, Jeff’s 50th Birthday Party Cruise, and you did not hesitate. You and your team were on point, on task and assisted with my every question and concern. During the planning phases, Robin helped ease my mind with the who, what, when, where and hows of this party cruise!  Since we had such a large group, your website and Facebook helped to keep our group well informed.

The cruise ship became our private venue or so it seemed to us.  We celebrated Jeff’s 50th Birthday with a Bang, as well as other birthdays and anniversaries to be tossed into the mix.  We really didn’t need a reason to celebrate, we were all thrilled and happy to be Cruising.  Our ports of call were what Jeff wanted!  Jeff’s Birthday theme, well let’s just say, everyone on the ship knew who we were.  From our adjoining balconies to our party favors, you and I had everything covered. Robin- all your special touches were noticed by each and every one of us…again!!!!!

Jeff’s 50th Birthday Party Cruise was a huge success!!!! My husband had the time of his life!  And for this my hat is off to you and I say, “A Thousand Thank Yous Robin!” I could not have done it without you.

Until our next cruise, Robin!  Which will be soon…

Godspeed, Denise

PS. The attached photo is some of our group on Jeff’s favorite Island.  It was a GREAT Day! 😉

Oasis of the Seas

By Barry Vaudrin

For those cruise vacationers who have been on many cruises over the years, you might know some of these secrets of cruising, however; it’s my challenge here to come up with cruise secrets that avid cruisers may not be aware of.

1. Always seek out a Cruise Expert agency to book your cruise.

I have a few friends that regardless of my advice, continue to fall for the mistake of booking their cruise directly with the cruise line, or with a travel agency that doesn’t specialize in booking cruises.  Not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with booking directly through the cruise line, it’s simply in your best interest to find a Cruise Expert agency, because they are aware of and granted by the cruise lines based on their booking volume, special perks, upgrades, discounts and amenities only offered to high volume cruise agencies.   You may get a great deal on your cruise booked directly with the cruise line, and it may even be the same price quoted by a cruise-only agency, but what you may not know, is that that same cruise booked through the cruise-only agency can offer a special amenities package that the cruise line does not offer.  You could save money.  You could get an upgrade, and you can receive unbiased advice from a cruise-only travel agency.  It does not cost anything extra to book through a cruise-only travel agency, and I think you will be pleased with the results the next time you plan to book a cruise.  Tap-in to the upgrades, discounts, special amenities and other nice surprises the next time you book a cruise with a cruise-only travel agency.

2. Order more than one entrée.

When you are onboard a wonderful cruise ship and dining in the main dining room, why limit yourself to only one entrée?  This is a little secret many don’t know, which is you can order multiple entrees if you see several option on the menu that appeal to you.  Go ahead, the next time you’re in the dining room, order two entrees, or two soups, or two desserts, you’re on vacation!

3. Book Shore Excursions online, before your cruise.

Many cruise lines now offer pre-booking shore excursions well before your cruise date.  You may not save money doing this, but here’s the key….if you wait to book your cruise once you board the ship, you may find that the best shore excursions are sold out.  Don’t find yourself in this situation, plan out which excursions you may like weeks or months before your cruise,  and secure your excursion tickets before they are sold out.

4. Use the showers and steam room in the spa.

The bathroom and shower in your stateroom may be very nice, but I have found that the showers in the spas sometimes have water-pressure.  Also, many of the spas have a steam room that is free to use in the men’s and women’s changing areas.  I love a nice steam to wake me up for the day.

5. Change-out bed linens and pillows.

Chances are you will find your bed and linens to be very comfortable, but if you discover you’re not entirely comfortable with your mattress, the linens or pillows, talk to your room steward and explain your concern, because often times there are special mattress-toppers, linens and pillows your steward can find to make your bed fit your comfort needs.

6. Never purchase bottled water onboard the ship.

I’m amazed when I see passengers spend their hard-earned cash on something like bottled water.  The modern cruise ships have incredibly high-tech water filtration systems onboard, so the water right out of the tap in your stateroom is going to be exceptionally purified and clean.  When you pack for your next cruise, buy a nice water / juice bottle and pack it in your luggage.  Fill your water / juice bottle using the sink in your stateroom.  One extra little trick I do, is bring several boxes or packets of your favorite Crystal Light or the new MioEnergy “liquid water enhancer” and flavor your water, add some ice to make it cold and ta ta…..you have a refreshing drink that doesn’t cost you a penny onboard the ship!

7. If you don’t like your table-mates?

It happens; sometimes you may get placed at a table with people who might not fit with your idea of good dinner companions.  At the entrance to the dinning room, ask to speak with the Restaurant Manager or Maître-d, and simply request to be place at another table.  You will be discreetly moved to another table.

8. Gratuities

Most cruise lines now offer automated gratuities to make it simpler to thank and tip the service crew that clean your stateroom and bring your food in the dinning room.  For those, however; who want to have more control of who receives a gratuity from you, and how much you give, you can visit the purser’s desk and ask for the automated gratuities to be removed from your end-of-cruise invoice.  Once this has been done, you can determine how much you want to tip certain people that have made your cruise an excellent experience.  This is a personal issue, and I often enjoy rewarding those who go the extra mile by personally handing them an envelope with my cash-gratuity inside.  The automated gratuity system is convenient for those who don’t know how much to tip, and who should receive a tip.  I like to tip the old-fashioned way, and personally hand that waiter, maitre d, or cabin steward my personal thanks with cash in an envelope.
